As they say, rain is good luck on a wedding day. There was a funny commercial many years ago that humorously proposed the idea of movie studios running weddings. It started raining and the bride screamed “What? Why is it raining!” and the rain stopped. The camera cut to a guy turning off the water works saying somewhat indignantly, “No rain, no rainbows.”
Well, the weather for Emily and Dan’s October wedding was. . . well, let’s just call it less than ideal. That’s the bad news, and it’s the only bad news. Cedarbrook Country Club had a covered area where the ceremony was moved, and not a single person’s spirits seemed to be damped by the damp. I had a lovely time chatting with Emily and Dan’s families, even if I had to quickly jolt my brain back to “standard” American English after being around some of the Texans that started to bring my East Texas accent back! Cedarbrook Country Club is in Blue Bell, PA so I got a real kick out of seeing Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla ice cream (a fond staple of my youth) shipped in for the dessert station.
Emily and Dan found me through Zola, and we immediately hit it off in our first meeting. Their story of cross-country beginnings appealed to me especially, as I grew up in Texas and my wife grew up in New Jersey. It was also hard not to start talking actual football (most of you call it soccer) with Dan who was also a player, but he already had something much bigger on his mind: marrying the love of his life. They had so much in common with me it was just uncanny. Emily loves relaxing in hammocks, so do I. They love to camp, which I did a lot of as a Boy Scout and would still enjoy to this day if time permitted.
The ceremony they worked with me to craft truly spoke to their passions both individually and together, and everything was so perfectly in the moment that everyone seemed to forget that Emily’s alma mater Oklahoma was in their biggest rivalry game of the year against UT Austin. And that was yet another connection I had a fun time laughing about with her family, as I used to work as a House Manager at the Music Hall at Fair Park where the Cotton Bowl is, and what a terrible traffic mess that weekend always is in Big D.
I’m so happy to have had the honor and joy of celebrating Emily and Dan’s wedding with them, with their families, and at a venue with such kind and helpful team members. It was a truly beautiful wedding, regardless of the weather, and I know that Emily and Dan are taking their first steps on a journey together that will be absolutely fantastic!
